This project will help teenagers aged 13–18 from Ukrainian and local Scottish families in Springburn to build confidence, friendships, and emotional wellbeing through art.
Young people will explore drawing, painting, collage, and creative storytelling in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. Art becomes a tool for expression, healing and connection — especially for those who struggle to express feelings in words.
By the end of six months, participants will organise a community art exhibition to share their work and experiences.
“Art helps me say what I feel,” said one of our young people during a previous creative session.
What you will do and why
Many local teenagers — especially those who have fled war or live in low-income households — feel isolated, anxious and disconnected. There are few free, creative opportunities in the area that bring together refugee and local youth.
Through Art for Belonging, we will create a safe, welcoming space where they can:
- express themselves creatively,
- meet new friends,
- and gain confidence through gentle artistic guidance.
Sessions will be led by a local artist and supported by volunteers from ProUA Hub. Each week will explore a theme such as “Home,” “Hope,” “Nature,” or “Identity.”
Who will benefit
- 15–20 teenagers (aged 13–18) living in Springburn and nearby areas.
- Including both Ukrainian refugee youth and local Scottish young people.
They will:
- gain self-confidence and communication skills,
- experience reduced stress and isolation,
- learn creative and teamwork skills,
- and feel proud to share their work with the community.
Outcomes
By the end of 6 months:
1. Teenagers will feel more confident, creative and connected.
2. They will have built friendships across cultures.
3. Participants will demonstrate improved wellbeing and self-expression.
4. The community will celebrate youth creativity through the final exhibition.
Monitoring will include attendance, short reflections, parent feedback and photos of artworks.
Sustainability
After June 2026, ProUA Hub will continue monthly art sessions with volunteers and seek small donations or materials sponsorship. We will also partner with Spirit of Springburn and Springburn Unity Network to include youth artwork in future community events and local festivals.
This project leaves a lasting impact — creative, confident young people who feel they belong. 🎨
