A Fresh Coat for Springburn Park: Project Update from Plans to First Results

The ProUA Hub team is excited to share the latest progress on our environmental project, "A Fresh Coat for Springburn Park", delivered with the generous support of the Glasgow Area Partnership (Springburn/Robroyston Area Partnership).

🎨 What We Planned to Achieve

The main objective of the project is to restore and repaint a section of the historic metal fence surrounding the Rockery Garden in Springburn Park. While the park is a vital green space for the local community, neglected elements and flaking paint were reducing the sense of comfort and safety.

Key Project Phases:

1. Preparation: Thoroughly clean and strip years of old paint and rust from the fence surfaces.

2. Painting: Apply durable, eco-friendly paint in calm, natural tones.

3. Community Engagement: Host joint outdoor wellbeing sessions for local residents, refugees, youth, and families to foster social connections, support mental health, and improve the local environment.

Overall, the project aims to enhance the park's appearance and make it a more welcoming space for thousands of Springburn residents.

🛠️ Progress to Date

We are currently tackling the most physically demanding phase of the project — preparing and cleaning the metal structures.

• 6 Volunteer Sessions Held: To date, we have organized and successfully run 6 volunteering events (tolokas).

• Community Involvement: Participation ranged from 2 to 21 volunteers per session. Every contribution — whether a small two-person shift or a large group turnout — has made a huge difference.

• Key Outcome: Thanks to the hard work of all participants, the fence is now almost entirely stripped of old paint, and we are nearly ready to move on to the priming and painting stage!

🌿 Overcoming Challenges & Special Thanks

Stripping away decades of paint requires significant physical labor. Overgrown vegetation and trees surrounding the fence added an extra hurdle by blocking access to the metal structure.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers from TCV Scotland (The Conservation Volunteers), who cleared the heavy growth and mowed the area around the Rockery Garden. Thanks to their efforts, we now have full two-sided access to the entire fence line. Special thanks to our trusted partner and friends Springburn Unity Network.
